People keep asking me what my influences are when it comes to design and other creative aspects. I usually point out a few artists or a designer here or there that have influenced my work over the years. I thought it would be fun to feature some of them on a regular basis; so I guess this would really be the start of a series. I'll post more as I go along and hopefully you draw similar inspiration from these artists as I have.

I draw my inspiration for both writing and design from a number of different sources on and offline. One thing I particularly enjoy is CG art; I used to paint a lot (Oils, Acrylics, Gouache, etc.), and it was a great way to exorcise some of the ideas rattling around in my head. Digital art is fast becoming accepted as a new medium in fine art and design, and with the freedom of the Internet, people are able to spread word their work and find avenues into mainstream design that would normally take years to accomplish.

Marc Burnet is based in Montreal, Canada. His work among many other artists has been a source of inspiration for my creative endeavors; whether it’s writing, design or even dabbling in illustration now and then, I like to refer to his work especially for the color pallets he tends to employ. Marc’s work reveals a lot of eastern influence mixed with a distinctive western style that marries well. Most of the subject matter explores various aspects of that blended cultural influence with a hint of the fantastical intertwined with science fiction, all without going completely beyond either end of the spectrum.

Here is a great example of his most recent work:

Though his work still has some rough edges, his ideas and his composition are strong. Keep an eye on this guy; some of his future work might crop up in places you might not expect.

Those are some very nice images, and the colour pallets are brilliant. I often take images that I find using striking colour and drop them into an ‘inspiration’ folder for reference in my future designs. Glad to see I’m not alone in that.

Matt: In school we used to keep a “clip file” which consisted mostly of magazine clippings and such with color pallets and interesting design elements we came across in our everyday life. The clip file I keep now is on my computer and it’s burgeoning. I’ll post more material later this week.
