Twilight Saga WordPress Theme
UPDATE (2008.08.27): I'm kind of embarrassed that I published this theme without performing any quality assurance. In any case, I’ve re-factored the markup from the ground up, and fixed many of the layout issues that were cropping up in the last build. I also wanted to clarify a couple things: this theme uses PNG’s to take advantage of transparencies such that *modern* browsers are able render them properly; second, none of the themes I develop are widget-ready – I’ll get around to it some day; and hey if you want to take a shot at it – be my guest! The theme you will download is version 2.0. If you have an older version of the theme, please feel free to replace it. My apologies for the false start.
There are so many themes out there that just don’t seem to have much of a concept behind them, in fact most seem to be little more than decoration. I don’t think WordPress themes need to always have a concept behind them, but the ones that do tend to stick around longer. I had a bit of downtime a little while ago and I wanted to create a WordPress Theme that had a little bit more of unified concept.
At the time Stephanie Meyer had just released the third book in her debut series, the “Twilight Saga”, and I had admired the book covers while browsing through my local Chapters bookstore.
There are so many books that hit the shelves these days that covers just start to blend together into one big mottled wallpaper. So it was a mild surprise when I encountered the stark black and minimalist cover designs.
The Twilight Theme
Inspired by this, I decided to design and develop a WordPress Theme based on the book covers.
Variations
I thought I would have been satisfied with using only one of the book covers as inspiration, but the more I worked on it, the more I felt that I couldn’t settle with just one. On top of that, I think anyone who would have been interested in using the theme would likely have a favourite cover graphic other than the one I preferred most.
Here are some variations of the same WordPress theme. It didn’t take much (CSS is awesome), and I even went as far as to allow customization with quick modification of one of the theme files.
Now WordPress authors can use either one of these themes. There’s a fourth book that is coming out: “Breaking Dawn” which I will try to add to this series at a later date.

Notes
BIG FYI: It looks like the comment’s code is missing from this build. I will work on getting that re-implemented tonight. My applogies for the inconvenience!
If you want to modify the graphic to achive either of the variations above, all you have to do is find the file “settings.php” in the Twilight theme folder (includes/settings.php), and edit the following snippet at the very beginning of the file:
// use either "twilight" or "eclipse" or "newmoon" to customize which graphic to show $THEME_GRAPHIC = 'eclipse';
This theme is built on the same basic framework as my current Lemon Twist Theme. As such, you will likely want to install a few WordPress plugins that work with this theme, so take a look through this README file.
If you are running into errors when applying the theme, it is likely that a plugin is missing and is causing the problem. If you encounter this, check out the “includes” directory and modify any of the offending includes in the “sidebar” sub directory.

Very Nice theme… Almost droped my beverage when I saw you had a new theme. I would love to see a demo site to get a peek at the whole thing. Being me, This theme is quite attractive as judging by the screen shot seems not extremely hard to modify (colours, header, sidebar structure). Thanks alot for the great work. Not an update to the Lemon Twist as expected but still beautiful.

P.S the bar at the top looks really smooth and though is not extremely noticeable I think it adds quite a bit to the layout. I’d Love to see more themes with the top page navigation (great example: http://chris.pirillo.com/ the subscribe and help buttons).

I hope I’m not becoming troublesome.
Just downloaded the new package, and it seems that the page links from the top menu do not work. Also, is there a way to ensure that the first line of the comments do not run, and also recognize line breaks? Right now the first line of comments are somehow indented to the right, but the indentations are not uniform, leading me to conclude that it’s not intentional.

Sicarii – The page links functionality is described in Chris’ comments on his previous posting about Lemon Twist theme. In short, you need to assign the page to a template. He describes it in a way that I can’t, so I suggest reading his Lemon Twist comments where he mentions this (it really is quite simple, honest). I initially found it really confusing too.
No doubt Chris will be along shortly to give a more helpful pointer than I can just now.
I agree with you regarding the comments though. I’m finding this quite frustrating too – especially with regards to the line breaks issue. The indentations and the lack of line breaks really does leave the comments looking very untidy as a result.
Not a criticism of the theme in any way – it really is beautiful, but those of us not in any way worldly wise with CSS and stuff could end up with a totally goofed theme if we attempt fixing the issue ourselves.
Any help would be great here, Chris.

Did you take into consideration the fact that the photography used on the covers of these books is protected by copyright? Unless you have permission, you should not be distributing these images (free or not).
You could avoid this by taking your own photos or purchasing images similar in style to those on the book cover.

What an AWESOME theme you’ve made! Really, im hunting for theme’s for months now, seen some nice ones but this one is really beautifull. I have one problem with running it though, can’t post the URL because I’m using my old theme for the time being but you can see a screenshot here: http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/buijsmanp/twilight.png
As you can see only the first post has the ‘paper’ background. I don’t think thats supposed to be like that right? The links you see in the other posts aren’t clickable while they are at other theme’s. I already downloaded and actived the plugin you mentioned above. Do you have any idea what is wrong? (I’m still running wordpress 2.3, could that be the problem?) But very nice once again! If the problem is fixed I will surely use it!
Ow yeah, and I read every reply here and Kathy said the images from the books where copywrited. I really don’t hope you get problems with that after making such a wonderfull theme.

Hi Piet, I’ve done a few things different with this version of the Twilight theme (2.0), and one of those changes is to render “older” postings different than the most recent (I have a bit of a tradition with this as you can likely tell from this blog). The pulgin youo downloaded enables the extended excerpt feature to render a little more gracefully.

If you check my site you can see it. There is now the tile “new moon” and the description is “wordpress theme”‘.
In the previous version the wordpress blogtitle and description were shown.
Also, if you check the photos link, the code for the nextgen gallery is shown. In the previous version the gallery worked normal.

I’m having the same issue too, I don’t know if this will help but I did read on the plugin site there have been issues with the “more” tag, one guy posted up a fix which I tried, but it still didn’t solve the problem. There’s also something about the function the_excerpt_reloaded must be used in The Loop, I tried to find some recent documentation for the loop in WordPress 2.6.1, am still looking!
Wish I could be of more help, I’m not a programmer, else I’d offer to fix it myself heh, thank you for the lovely theme!

First: I’m not English, nor do I know a lot about PHP. I don’t really understand your answer to my post. You say it renders older posts different then the newest one. I saw that and I liked it. But when you see screenshot 1 (V2) then (IMO) its not half as nice as screenshot 2 (V1). The white background and the equally sized older posts look a lot more neat then the brown background and the bigger older posts in V2. In both versions the hyperlink (to roadtrippers.nl) doesn’t work by the way. So I don’t know if its a bug that V2 has bigger old posts and no white background, or a feature. If its a feature then I apologize and its just a matter of different taste
Second: The header. Joost also noticed it. In screenshot3 you see the header from V1. It has MyBlog title, which is good. In screenshot4 you see the header from V2. It’s called New Moon while my blog isn’t called like that. We guess the New Moon is hard coded.
Third: Its just a minor thing but I’m writing this anyway so might as well tell you know. In V1 your sidebar has the same color as your background (and I love it). The footer works perfect as well. In V2 something changed. The sidebar has a darker color now (at least in Safari) (see the sidebar in screenshot4). Thats not a problem, but something happened to the footer as well. See screenshot5. In Firefox it worked fine though, but in Safari it looks like that.
Well that was all. Hope this post helped you understand us a bit more. Don’t see it as hate-mail, we just try to make the theme better with this feedback

Chris, I installed all the necessary plug-ins, apart from Contact Form, Chip’s website seems to be inaccesible for now, and couldn’t find any other download link, do you know of any alternative download location? Thanks!

I just uploaded an incremental build (2.0.1), which fixes the header — turns out that I’m a little blind, as the title was “new moon” in the header.php file. Lame. Okay, as the discolration on the background behind the sidebar, that was the result of the PNG gamma still present in the image files. I’ve removed those now (thanks for catching that), and if you re-download the theme, you’ll find the updates should answer your issues.
I thought a lot about how v1of the theme rendered the older postings, and I understand that some of you liked it, but it just seemed like overkill on the design side, and I really wanted to make sure the most recent posting had the greatest impact; in any case, I don’t think I’ll revert back to v1 for that design, but please feel free to take what I have and modify it to suit your needs.

Hi Chris, great to see you replying that fast! The header problem is fixed, just like the sidebar and footer issue. Very nice and thank you! I understand your choice about the older posts and the reaction.
I discovered one more thing: if you click a catagory which has (for example) 20 posts in it, then you (or at least I) see only the first 5 posts. Usually there is a ‘next/previous’ page button to see the even older posts, but there isn’t any in this case. So it seems you only see the first few posts in every catagory and there is no way to read the older ones (except using the archives or having a lucky hit using the searchbar).
Well that really was it, no more suggestions from this side

Hi,
First of all, thank you so much for this brilliant theme! It’s truly incredible and so tastefully designed! I use it for one of my blogs, but I want to join Piet with the request for previous / next pages, which would be good to have on index page as well. I did add them myself, using the default php code piece for previous pages, it does take me to page 2, 3 and so on BUT it still shows the same posts on every page.
So basically i’d want to have the standard facility of viewing the index page and browse back / forward in time… Thanks in advance for your time!

Hi Chris,
very nice themes here. Have you planned a future release of the PSD files (just as you did for Lemon Twist) for the Twilight theme? I’d like to make some modifications, e.g. make it sidebar-less (organizing contents horizontally) and increasing the width of the post area. But I need a wider version of the background ‘paper’ image for doing that.
If you can release PSD files (or simply a wider ‘paper’ image), I could start to work: I’m planning to make this theme widget ready and localizable by means of gettext too.

I’m also planning to widgitize the theme,. as well as whip up an options page to change what book graphic is shown, so you don’t have to edit the theme files.
I’ll be using it on a wordpressMU install where users do not have access to the theme editor, and everyone shares the same theme, so it needs to be a flexible as possible – like wordpress.com.
Since the users at my site are quite into books, I think this theme is going to see a lot of use.

I actually lost the source PSD’s in a recent external HD failure, I would have shared the PSD’s for this theme as I traditionally do, but they’re gone, gone, gone. If I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll re-create them; however the likelyhood of that happening in the near future is slim (who knows though…).

Hey Andrea, I had a couple questions regarding widgetization — I’ve sucessfully managed to widgetize my Lemon Twist theme (I’ll release the update shortly); however, I found that in order to actually have workable widgets (especially ones that use plugins), you have to create a unqiue plugin which register as widgets. This seems a little backwards to me — is this common?

I fixed the sidebar… A plugin crushed it (permalinks redirect). But I do have a very big problem with every Plugin that uses a slug like the Plugins-Used-Plugin or any of the Contakforms… () Any Idea how to fix it?

This is a nice theme, and I was trying it out on my test site and it’s giving errors/not showing up properly.
Screenshot I did double check to make sure everything uploaded, and it had.

The issue I have with this (other than that the “missing” images mysteriously work on the post view) is the copyright on the bottom. I don’t have issues with designers wanting credit, of course – the issue I have is that the copyright is exactly the same as the copyright on this site. I.E. it says “sitenamehere” is the property of Chris Murphy blah de blah blah blah. you can check it out on the screenshot. It wouldn’t be an issue from me, since I know something about modifying codes – but you should still fix it.

Hi Steph, judging by the screenshot, it looks as if you are missing a plugin that needs to be activated (“the_excerpt Reloaded”). Install and activate that plugin and the display issue will be resolved. As for the footer, simply open “footer.php” in notepad or any other text editor and replace my name/domain with yours etc.

Not sure if you’ve encountered this, but when using the Twilight Theme, any plugin that uses the [shortcodes] convention to call a function works great on the home page or posts pages, however, not on any static page. I’ve tried to figure this out for a while, and have drawn a complete blank. I tried comparing the code from the functioning & non-functioning pages, to no avail.
For instance, I’m using the Next Generation Gallery plugin (which is truly phenomenal)

And it renders the slideshow beautifully.

Hi, very nice theme, I wont to use this, but something is wrong! Yesterday I install WordPress – the newest version and after this – your theme, I make change: “eclipse”. After this I try to post some new – I use Bulgarian language, but the default post, before mine- is in Bulgarian too. When I postetd my post – the middle part of backgrond is missing – why….Something is not ok, but I cannto find what . Maybe something in WordPress Option. How many post must to see in 1 page – 10 or must to be only 1 ? Or any ideas, what is happening. maybe, because I post in onother language, but with firs post everything is ok. And , after I click on some post and see it post in onoter page – only one post – I see it corectly!

Yes – the same error- I make anothe – NEW instalation of WordPress – with your theme – the same error – when I have only ONE POST in mine blog – everything, looks good, but , when I post the second – I cant see the paper background in my first page. If I click on some post – I go to another page with only one post and everything again looks good….
What we can make about this problem ? Majbe I must to make my Options: only 1 post per page ?!?

Very attractive theme but a version without being forced to use 3rd party plugins would be much appreciated. We all have our own favorite plugins. I have ones that I regularly employ on WP sites but I don’t think it would make sense to design a theme that was dependent on those plugins for others to use.

Okay, I don’t take it back – I’ve reinstalled this theme 4 times now, and sometimes forms work, sometimes they don’t. If I switch to another theme, immediately the forms appear. Such as contact form 7 and subscribe2. If anyone can give a hint as to why, I’d really appreciate it! Cheers

Gotta tell you, I think this is a great layout, even if it wasn’t Twilight themed. I love the page feature – great design, clear, beautiful work. Wouldn’t mind replacing the Twilight images with others and using the theme. Good work!

I tend to agree–when I find some time to refactor my themes, I’ll be sure to exclude dependencies or at least add checks for certain dependencies. Many of the themes I build now have custom features built into the theme so the theme works ‘out-of-the-box’ now.

I want to create a custom WordPress theme, but I don’t have administrative access to the computer that I’m using, so I can’t install WordPress to test my theme. Is there another easy way to do it? I have photoshop, and notepad ++ both installed on my flash drive, but as far as I know there is no way to install WordPress on a flash drive.

A large percentage of of the things you say is supprisingly legitimate and it makes me wonder why I had not looked at this with this light previously. This particular article really did switch the light on for me personally as far as this specific subject matter goes. if you click a catagory which has (for example) 20 posts in it, then you (or at least I) see only the first 5 posts. Usually there is a ‘next/previous’ page button to see the even older posts, but there isn’t any in this case. So it seems you only see the first few posts in every catagory and there is no way to read the older ones (except using the archives or having a lucky hit using the searchbar).
